This year the car's hood is lower and its A-pillars are thinner, and the side-view mirrors move onto the doors so engineers could install a small quarter window to further help visibility. The priciest Corolla is the XSE, which starts at $26,380 and is similar, features-wise, to the XLE. The Hyundai Elantra is probably the closest car to the Corolla, offering great trim packaging and a decent drive at a good price. It offers a less distracting way to keep up on various vehicle goings-on, and I'm always appreciative of that.

With the caveat that it's a low bar to clear, the 2020 Corolla looks a whole lot less bland than its predecessor. Like the Camry before it, the Corolla has been reinvented in its latest installment to count as one of its segment’s most stylish entries. The standard continuously variable transmission exhibits the so-called rubber-band effect, sending the engine's revs zinging up and down, which makes linear and smooth acceleration a little tough.
With no great difference in on-road performance or price, there’s very little reason not to choose the hybrid option. That CarPlay connection is a saving grace, though, as Toyota’s infotainment interface is clunkier than competitor systems and slower to respond to inputs. The car's visibility is excellent in every direction. It's not a quick car, but in urban driving most people will never find themselves aching for more power. The cabin’s focal point happens to be one of its key features: an eight-inch touchscreen that’s used to run the infotainment system. The dashboard makes interesting use of layering, and the whole thing feels very well bolted together. The secondary controls are all easy enough to manipulate. The Corolla suffers from a notable delay when you step on the accelerator: There's a beat between when you press the right pedal and when the engine begins to respond. The sport trims can be purchased with the CVT or with a six-speed manual transmission. The Corolla is notably loud inside, with plenty of road and engine noise intruding into the cabin.
At least all the materials feel nice to the touch and are less plasticky than before.
