With any luck, our pants would stay dry and we would see land once again. The Amphicar could be ordered with lifesaving and rescue equipment and some Amphicars were purchased by the German Police for this type of role. And then there’s those propellers. The wonderful world of the Amphicar.
There’s good feedback through the steering wheel, and none of the controls are vague. Manufacturing: Made by the Quandt Group at Lübeck and also at Berlin-Borsigwalde. Once past that point, you’ve set in motion a chain of events that will continue to their fruition pretty much regardless of any further input on your part. Just as drivers of four wheel drive vehicles who take their cars to the beach for fishing have to carefully wash the underside of their car when they leave the beach the same held true for the Amphicar.
Jon has done radio, television, magazine, and newspaper interviews on various issues, and has traveled extensively, having lived in Britain, Australia, China, and Hong Kong. The gas pedal still controls the throttle, which now spins the direct-driven props through a special transfer case. In any case, you can get your flippers on a seaworthy Amphicar for around $25,000 these days. Those parts might not be cheap, but you can probably stomach the cost if you can afford the car in the first place. The Amphicar 770 (770 represents 7 miles on water, 70 miles an hour on land) first surfaced at the 1959 German Auto Show and a couple years later entered America in 1961. I didn't know then just what I'd seen, but a little red car with twin propellers made an indellible impression on me that day.
Cars regularly used in salt water have mostly disintegrated at this point. If you forget, your wet feet will remind you. Hanns Trippel was a visionary, and the surviving Amphicars which were the product of his vision are lovingly cared for and enjoyed more than fifty years after they went out of production. In designing the Amphicar Hans Trippel used a similar design concept to the Schwimmwagen but refined it, and turned it into a quite stylish civilian vehicle.
In fact, Ray reports that they have never needed the automatic bilge pump to evacuate water intruding from the undercarriage. We watched with amazement when a car drove down the ramp, and continued into the water. Whether you are returning or visiting for the first time, I hope you find our group interesting and will want to return. This system works about as well as you imagine it might, which is to say it barely works at all.
Point the Amphicar toward the exit point and engage the drive wheels just slightly before they hit bottom. While we weren’t about to take the Amphicar out to any track days, it admirably handled the tight corners and sweeping curves of the Ocala Gran Prix kart track.
Hanns Trippel’s Amphicar managed moderate success, with the viability of production of the car being killed off in 1968 by new US regulations on vehicle standards. Nowadays if you want a twenty-first century amphibious car you might want to have a look at the Aquada at Gibbs High Speed Amphibians. | Posted in
Jan 7, 2020 If you have a rusty fiberglass boat, you’ve either been the victim of a very unscrupulous and very talented salesman, or you need to seriously rethink your boat maintenance regimen. Many of them still linger around and remain some of the surest ways of getting all eyes on you. This means that the bodywork had to be well maintained and this became critical if the Amphicar was used in salt water.
For one thing, fiberglass tends to be lighter and more repairable than steel. Late 1970's.
We'd never heard of Amphicars back then, and fully expected it to sink! The Amphicar was the brainchild of German designer Hans Trippel who is said to have been inspired by the amphibious military vehicles of the Second World War, especially the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen (translated: Swimming Car). Is it about to sink?) Because of its substantial weight, the Amphicar needs to displace a serious amount of water before it will float—nearly 40 cubic feet of water by our math, which we admit may not be correct.
The bodywork of the Amphicar was made of heavier gauge steel than a typical road car: and the bodywork was seam welded and lead sealed. Amphicars have crossed the English Channel, traversed the Strait of Gibraltar, and made the passage to Southern California’s Catalina Island. The Amphicar was claimed to be “the fastest car in the water and the fastest boat on the highway.” And although its performance as a car, and as a boat, was mediocre, yet it had that amazing ability to traverse land and water with efficient ease. That heft was necessary, however, to keep the sea out and the dry in.
Particularly at low speeds, the Amphicar changes direction with less urgency in the water than on land, where it isn’t terribly urgent to begin with.
The Amphicar is underpowered by modern standards, but it goes down the road with a great deal of dignity and grace.
Like so many cars of that era, the Amphicar on the road is easily more than the sum of its parts. The car featured sealed axle shafts in the rear, a bilge pump, and twin props.
We found the sealing on the Hornsbys’ Amphicar to be rather excellent.
The good news is that parts availability is rather decent for such an unusual car. In off roading circles the Camel…, The Opel GT is often referred to as the “Baby Corvette” due to its visual similarity to the third generation Chevrolet Corvette (the C3), both Opel and Chevrolet are General Motors-owned companies and the similarities…, The White M16 MGMC Half-Track was originally developed to fulfill an anti-aircraft role during WW2, with its M45 Quadmount of Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns. The Amphicar has an upswept “bow” at the front along with a flat bottom. As a car, it’s an unremarkable early-1960s European convertible sedan.
Meanwhile, the engine exhaust exits through a hole well above the rear bumper.

One walk around an Amphicar, and you realize pretty quickly that this is not so much a boat you can drive on land, but rather a car that floats. When you start throwing it around, however, you really notice the weight. Fuel consumption on the road approximately 32 mpg (imperial), and 2 gallons per hour in the water. In all honesty, the perceived stresses of entries and exits are far greater than the actual act. We thought about this deep philosophical truth as we were driving a car into a lake.
Edge was well-known for his friendliness and enthusiasm for…. But while it is a bit wallowy, the handling is predictable and fun given the car’s mission. The steering wheel is big, the brakes are iffy, the handling is soft, and the 43-horsepower engine has a hard time getting the car out of its own way. Drivetrain Layout: Rear engine, rear-wheel drive, Horsepower: 43 @ 4750 rpm Torque: 61 lb.-ft. @ 2250 rpm, Transmission: 4-speed manual land; forward and reverse gearbox sea, Suspension: Coil springs front; swing axle rear. It’s also crucial to rinse and inspect the many seals found where mechanical items pass between dry and wet areas. The waves can’t be too big, mind you, although the Amphicar does boast a rather impressive list of maritime feats. The Amphicar was claimed to be “the fastest car in the water and the fastest boat on the highway.” And although its performance as a car, and as a boat, was mediocre, yet it had that amazing … And if that mission should involve taking a hostile beach, the Amphicar is without a doubt your weapon of choice.
The fastest thing he’s ever driven was a Bolwell Nagari, the slowest was a Caterpillar D9, and the most challenging was a 1950’s MAN semi-trailer with unexpected brake failure.
It was, simply put, one of the most amazing and unexpected things I'd ever seen in my young life.
A properly maintained Amphicar did not leak at all and could be left in the water with the engine off for long periods of time, so it was not dependent on the bilge pump to keep it afloat. At higher speeds, the steering is a bit more effective as more water is flowing past the “rudders.” However, the Amphicar still isn’t going to make like a jet ski and carve holes in the waves.
That was over 50 years ago, and they still are unique in the car world. Performance: Top speed in water 7 knots, top road speed 70 mph. Reversing the props is the smarter move. No amount of body English will keep your errant tee shot in bounds once it leaves the club face, and no sum of backpedaling will erase that nasty e-mail you accidentally sent to “reply all.”.
The larger and slightly more powerful engines giving the Amphicar modest improvements in its somewhat pedestrian performance, summed up in the car’s model name, the Amphicar 770, which stood for 7 knots in the water and 70 mph on the road.
The convertible is a four-seater … Weight: 2,315 lb (1050 kg) with fuel and oil. Back in the ‘60s, the idea of having a car that could just as easily double as a boat was an oddly appealing one. You will only receive our top stories, typically no more than 5 per day.
